Health Education - Diabetic Retinopathy

Through a grant funded by NEI and NIDDK, VisionQuest Biomedical is developing a bilingual fotonovela to educate Hispanic individuals with Type II Diabetes who at risk for diabetic retinopathy. The booklet is designed to increase compliance with completing an annual eye exam.

Through this community-based participatory research project, (CBPR) VisionQuest Biomedical has conducted focus groups with individuals at risk and family members in Albuquerque, NM and San Antonio, Texas, as well as with health care providers and community leaders in these cities. From the results of the focus groups we have written a script and developed the fotonovela, a health edutainment booklet, using photographs of local actors. The fotonovela was field-tested for efficacy using KAP surveys. We are currently in the final phase of the study, compliance, testing the fotonovela within the two communities at large.

In a future Phase II study, we plan to expand the radius of the study to other cities with high-risk populations in New Mexico, Texas and California. Using a multi-media campaign, we will deepen the connections between the community at risk, health care providers and policy makers to close the compliance gap for screening of diabetic retinopathy.
